Buddy Up to Lighten Up Challenge![]() If you never thought you could walk or run a 5K race or really want to challenge yourself to complete a Half Marathon, join the Buddy Up to Lighten Up Challenge. The Challenge is meant to encourage inactive adults to complete a running/walking event and adopt a healthier lifestyle on an on-going basis. The Lighten Up Lancaster Coalition is working in partnership with the Hands-on House ½ Marathon; 5K and Kids Fun Run to challenge the resident of Lancaster County to Lighten Up! The Challenge will consist of a Buddy Up system whereby an Active/Seasoned/Experienced runner/walker would team up/mentor an Inactive/less experienced runner/walker. In addition to two person teams, teams of larger sizes consisting of equal numbers of Active/Inactive individuals working together as a team could participate under a Team Name. Such groups should have a team mentor to encourage attendance at weekly group training walks/runs. Along the way, keep a training log and receive useful training/health related tips to keep you motivated and injury free! The team would co-register for the event online or submit a paper registration. Clearly indicate on your registration you are part of the Buddy Up to Lighten Up Challenge. Then additionally register through the Buddy Up to Lighten Up Challenge link to ensure you receive your welcome package, training log access and race completion gift for achieving your goal and crossing the finish line! The interactive curriculum combines self-esteem enhancing lessons with uplifting workouts designed to develop the whole girl: her physical, mental, emotional and social self. Young girls are empowered with a greater sense of self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, self-confident women. Our 10-week program uses interactive activities such as running, playing games and discussing important issues to teach specific life skills such as making healthy decisions, how to deal with bullying and gossip and contributing to the community. Each session is led by trained coaches who guide and mentor the girls through the curriculum and help them train together to run or walk in the New Balance Girls on the Run 5K race series in the spring and a community-based 5K in the fall. Currently, there are more than 150 Girls on the Run councils across the US and Canada serving more than 50,000 girls. Girls on the Run of Lancaster is in its first year and will have served 250 girls and their families by Fall 2010. Solemates is the adult charity running program of Girls on the Run. GOTR Solemates are men and women who pursue individual goals, such as running a marathon, triathlon or a race of any distance, to raise money for our Girls on the Run council in Lancaster.
